Formal Education - United States

There is such a wide range of online educational opportunities out there, that one of the biggest challenges is finding the option best suited to your goals. Class Central, funded by the online educational establishments, offers an excellent place to start.  Its resources are frequently referenced below through hyperlink. University websites also offer information, either directly or through an affiliate.

Some online education is fully adapted to the online interface, with online quizzes, supporting documents, and assignments. Other free online courses are simply videos of lectures delivered on campus. Nevertheless, free instant access to recorded lectures by professors at the world’s most prestigious colleges and universities is definitely a treat that some of us will appreciate.

People interested in promoting their careers may prefer to enroll actively in a certificate or a degree program for credit. In such cases, the participant will need to go through an application process and consider the cost of the program, as they would for an on-campus degree program.

Online Certificate Programs

For the mid-career professional, or a young person ready to move forward quickly, a certificate program may make more sense than a degree. Here is some information for online certificate programs:   https://www.onlinecertificateprograms.org/business-mba/renewable-energy/

Free Online Courses

Many of the world’s best universities and colleges now offer free online courses. According to Wikipedia, 4/13/20,

"A massive open online course (MOOC /muːk/) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web. In addition to traditional course materials, such as filmed lectures, readings, and problem sets, many MOOCs provide interactive courses with user forums or social media discussions to support community interactions among students, professors, and teaching assistants (TAs), as well as immediate feedback to quick quizzes and assignments. MOOCs are a recent and widely researched development in distance education, first introduced in 2008 and emerged as a popular mode of learning in 2012.”

See the Class Central website for information about the options available and guidance on how best to take advantage of them:  https://www.classcentral.com/
