The following list of information sources has been selected as being free of charge, reasonably in-depth and serious, but easy to understand for interested members of the public.

Science Connected presents scientific information for the general public, covering a wide range of age groups.  Their offerings include educational materials, a website, a magazine, and issue a free e-newsletter.
